What Is Salsa Dance?
Salsa is a popular form of social dance originating in Cuba and before from United States of America U.S.A regions of New York and Puerto Rico and Cuban folk dances. The movements of Salsa are a combination of the Afro-Cuban dances Son, cha-cha-cha, Mambo, Rumba, bomba and the Danzón. The dance, along with salsa music, saw major development in the mid-1970s in New York. Different regions of Latin America and the United States have distinct salsa styles of their own, such as Cuban, Puerto Rican, Cali Colombia, L.A. and New York styles. Salsa dance socials are commonly held in night clubs, bars, ballrooms, restaurants, and outside, especially when part of an outdoor festival.

In many styles of salsa dancing, as a dancer shifts their weight by stepping, the upper body remains level and nearly unaffected by the weight changes. Weight shifts cause the hips to move. Arm and shoulder movements are also incorporated. Salsa generally uses music ranging from about 150 bpm (beats per minute) to around 250 bpm, although most dancing is done to music somewhere between 160–220 bpm. The basic Salsa dance rhythm consists of taking three steps for every four beats of music. The odd number of steps creates the syncopation inherent to Salsa dancing and ensures that it takes 8 beats of music to loop back to a new sequence of steps.
What Is Bachata Dance?
Often referred to in the West as "authentic / Dominican" bachata (traditional bachata), the original social dance was created in the Dominican Republic during the 1960s and was danced only in closed position, like the bolero, often in close embrace. Bachata basic steps are performed by moving within a small square (side, side, forward and then tap with your toes, then side, side, back and tap). This step was inspired by the bolero basic step, but evolved over time to include a tap and syncopations (steps in between the beats), helping dancers express the more dynamic music being commonly played. The hand placement can vary according to the position of the dances, which can range from very close to open to completely open.

Bachata is still danced today in the Caribbean and all over the world, and has been evolving for several decades. It is increasingly danced to faster music, adding more footwork, simple turns and rhythmic free-styling with alternation between close (romantic) and open position. Bachata is danced with soft hip movements and a tap or syncopation (1, 2, 3, tap/syncopation). It can also be danced with or without bouncing (moving the body up on the beats and down again in between the beats by adding slight spring to ones legs).

What Our Students Are Saying
SalsaKnox classes are great! You can really tell that Jacqueline and Waldo are both passionate and genuinely love what they do. They work well with advanced dancers and are especially good with beginners (even with mixed skill levels in the same class. Not sure how the manage to make that work, but they do). Even with zero experience, I never felt intimidated because no matter how many mistakes I made, they would always take time to help me with technique, choreography, or any other details I was having problems with. As a beginner, this helped me build some confidence about coming back again and again. In my opinion, they are the best in Knoxville for beginners. I enjoyed the time I spent in their classes.

I came here in February with ZERO prior experience and a bundle of nerves. It can't be easy to teach beginners, but they made Latin dance seem so very doable, even from the first day.

Their calm, clear, sequential approach has made it possible for me to learn steps that would otherwise seem completely intimidating. Although I am an introverted type, since enrolling here, I have made some new friends and actually look forward to Salsaknox Friday Night parties!
